Overview of CHAI and CHAI’s Vaccines Program
Immunization is one of the most successful public health interventions in history. National immunization programs reach >100 million infants every year and have averted globally two to three million deaths every year since the launch of the Expanded Program for Immunization (EPI). However, despite these successes, 1.5 million children still die each year of vaccine-preventable diseases. Many of these deaths occur in low-income countries, where immunization programs face unprecedented challenges (e.g., access to vaccines and ensuring vaccines reach all targeted people). On the bright side, advances in the development and financing of new vaccines provide great opportunities to tackle diseases and mortality through vaccine prevention.
Since 2010, CHAI has worked to save lives and reduce the burden of vaccine preventable diseases by improving coverage of immunization services in resource-limited settings. CHAI not only strengthens immunization systems, but does so with an eye to make them a stronger backbone for primary health care. CHAI achieves this by working to strengthen national immunization programs in >14 countries, by shaping relevant global markets, and by improving the global immunization ecosystem. CHAI’s portfolio includes six complementary strategic goals:
- Improving affordability and supply security of immunization products.
- Accelerating the uptake of new or under-utilized vaccines.
- Enhancing the performance of vaccine cold chain and logistics systems to increase effective immunization coverage.
- Improving the design and implementation of service delivery to reach the unreached.
- Supporting successful transition from Gavi support; and
- Strengthening the management system and capacity of immunization programs
Position Overview
CHAI’s Global Vaccines team is seeking a dynamic leader and program lead to manage responsibilities covering enhancing immunization service delivery to increase the number of children and adolescents immunized, reaching the underserved and reaching cohorts at new time points and across the life course. The Senior Manager, Immunization Service Delivery & Gender will manage a small team of 2–3 people to provide strategic and implementation support to ~15 focus countries in Sub Saharan Africa and Southeast Asia, and influence global practices on implementing sustainable and equitable vaccination programs. This is an opportunity to join a fast-paced, energized, matrixed team focused on implementing lasting, transformational impact in the global vaccines delivery space.
As part of the Global Vaccines team, and in collaboration with a small team of direct reports, Regional Managers, and country and program leadership, the position will:
- Drive program and grant management, (ii) lead CHAI's vaccines program in the area of Immunization Service Delivery (SD) & Gender
- Provide strategic and programmatic support for the design and implementation of work in countries
- Improve national and global practices and policies related to service delivery and gender
- Support integration in service delivery approaches.
The Senior Manager's work will help to achieve and sustain immunization program outcomes and will also serve as a blueprint to identify powerful interventions to improve health systems which could be adapted for other primary health care programs.
Location: Base location is flexible for this position, with a strong preference for one of CHAI’s Vaccine Program focus countries in Africa or Asia, subject to country leadership approval and work authorization.
Drive SD program and grant management, in collaboration with program and country leadership
- Develop, support and manage a team of ~2-3 global associates/technical advisors on the SD team, to drive team effectiveness and engagement across the portfolio;
- Support development of program-wide and country-specific objectives, strategies and milestones regarding new vaccine introductions;
- In collaboration with country team and regional managers, regularly assess progress against program objectives in areas of focus;
- Help prepare high-quality briefings for donors and CHAI management, including achievements to date, key risks & opportunities, and action plan going forward; effectively manage donor relationships.
Lead CHAI's vaccines program in immunization service delivery and gender, in collaboration with program and country leadership
- Develop/update CHAI’s strategy and thought leadership related to immunization service delivery and gender, both at global and country level, to increase CHAI’s effectiveness and impact;
- Support fundraising and grant proposal and budget development in line with CHAI’s strategy, model, competitive priorities and capabilities, both at country and global level;
- Foster horizontal collaboration across Global Vaccine Delivery subteams to ensure SD interventions are leveraged to support other CHAI’s vaccine delivery objectives (e.g. improving vaccine cold chain and supply chain, introducing new vaccines, supporting sub-national level management systems, ensuring successful transition from Gavi support, leveraging immunization to support primary health care strengthening etc.); putting in place appropriate mechanisms to ensure cross-fertilization across these objectives;
- Foster collaboration with other CHAI teams, including Vaccines Markets Team, Digital Health, Analytics & Implementation Research etc. to align strategic activities between service delivery and other relevant health interventions.
Provide strategic and programmatic leadership for the design and implementation of work in focus countries to dramatically and sustainably enhance service delivery at last mile, in collaboration with direct reports and Regional Managers
- Support ramp up of new workstreams and new focus countries, and strengthen capabilities of existing programs, leveraging institutional knowledge from CHAI;

Contribute to the design, planning and implementation of high-impact work with country teams to achieve high and sustainable coverage of new and routine vaccines in CHAI focus countries. Projects to support will include:
- Diagnose supply- and demand- side service delivery bottlenecks and developing strategies and interventions for improvement;
- Re-design service delivery strategies for reaching unvaccinated children;
- Develop robust monitoring and evaluation frameworks in which to assess impact of interventions;
- Support governments in codifying results for advocacy to affect policy and practice changes;
- Support governments in designing strategies for scale up;

Drive continuous development and effective dissemination and use of programmatic "toolkits" and “playbooks”, lessons learned, and other know-how related to immunization service delivery across CHAI's vaccines program focus countries. Elements of the toolkits may include, but are not limited to:
- Resource allocation and strategic planning for equitable immunization programs;
- Promising practices and lessons learned from reaching underserved populations;
- Technical support (tools, information and lessons learned developed across CHAI’s work) provided to country governments and partners and through global mechanisms that support immunization service delivery;
- Demonstrate impact and support countries to plan for scale and sustainability of high-impact work, including transition of successful practices to national government leadership.
Improve national and global practices and policies related to new vaccine introductions, in collaboration with direct reports and program leadership
- Develop productive relationships with key stakeholders (e.g., WHO, Gavi, BMGF, UNICEF, PATH, JSI, VillageReach, Jhpiego) and foster effective exchange of know-how with partners;
- Become a respected and trusted thought leader in this area of focus within CHAI and within the global immunization community;
- Disseminate CHAI's programmatic insights into the global immunization community and inform global policies and country practices beyond CHAI focus countries, including through Global working groups (e.g., EPI manager meetings, WHO hosted regional meetings, antigen specific global working groups, etc.).
- Bachelor's Degree or equivalent plus 10 years work experience; or Advanced Degree or equivalent plus 8 years work experience; or equivalent work experience in a fast-paced, demanding environment
