Functional Responsibilities

Under the guidance of the Supervisor, the Technical Senior Advisor (Specialist in the Just Energy Transition) will be responsible for the following duties:
  • Specialized Technical Advice in Just Energy Transition:

    • Provide expert technical advice and support to the mission hub on all aspects of a just energy transition, including renewable energy deployment, energy efficiency, grid modernization, policy frameworks, financing mechanisms, and the social and economic considerations of the transition.

    • Stay abreast of the latest technological advancements, policy developments, and best practices in a just energy transition globally.

  • Knowledge Management and Case Study Production (Focus for 2025):

    • Support the UNOPS KM team on the identification, development, and documentation of case studies that analyze successful and less successful just energy transition initiatives supported by UNOPS and other actors.

    • Analyze these case studies to identify what works well, what doesn't, what could be replicated in other contexts, and what the key barriers and enabling factors are for a just energy transition.

  • Foresight and Opportunity Identification (Focus for 2025):

    • Conduct foresight analysis to identify emerging trends, technological disruptions, policy shifts, and financing opportunities in the just energy transition space.

    • Analyze the evolving energy landscape and identify potential areas where UNOPS can play a significant role in supporting countries' transition goals.

  • Ideation and Scaling Up Approaches (Focus for 2025):

    • Facilitate ideation workshops and discussions with mission hub staff and partners to develop innovative approaches and solutions for accelerating a just energy transition.

    • Explore strategies for how UNOPS could scale up its support to countries in developing and implementing just energy transition plans and projects.

  • Partnership Engagement:

    • Provide technical input to the regions in engaging with governments, international organizations, financial institutions, the private sector, and civil society organizations on just energy transition initiatives.

    • Identify potential new partners and opportunities for collaboration in this thematic area.

  • Reporting and Documentation:

    • Prepare high-quality technical reports, case studies, briefing notes, and other products as required.

    • Contribute to the preparation of progress reports on the foresight and ideation activities of the mission hubs.

  • Other Duties:

    • Undertake other relevant tasks as assigned by the Supervisor.


Impact of Results:
The work of the Technical Senior Advisor (Specialist in Just Energy Transition) will directly contribute to:

  • Enhanced understanding of effective and less effective strategies for achieving a just energy transition.
  • Increased availability of high-quality case studies and knowledge products on just energy transition to inform UNOPS' work and that of its partners.
  • Improved strategic foresight capacity within the mission hub to anticipate future opportunities and challenges in the energy sector.
  • Identification of innovative approaches and strategies for scaling up UNOPS' support for a just energy transition.
  • Strengthened partnerships and more effective engagement with stakeholders in the energy sector.

This position is a temporary assignment for an initial period of 6 months with the possibility of extension subject to satisfactory performance and business needs.

Education/Experience/Language requirements

Education:
Advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in a relevant field such as energy policy, renewable energy engineering, climate change, sustainable development, economics with a focus on energy, or a related discipline.


Experience:

  • A minimum of 7 years of progressively responsible experience in providing technical advisory services related to energy transition, with a specific focus on the "just" aspects (social and economic considerations).
  • Demonstrated experience in areas such as renewable energy deployment, energy efficiency, grid modernization, and energy policy.
  • Experience in developing and analyzing case studies, and extracting lessons learned in the energy sector.
  • Experience in conducting foresight analysis and identifying emerging trends and opportunities in energy.
  • Experience in facilitating stakeholder consultations and developing collaborative approaches to energy transition.
  • Experience working with the United Nations or other international organizations is desirable.
  • Experience in knowledge management and partnership development is an asset.
  • Experience working in diverse cultural contexts and with multidisciplinary teams.

Language Requirements:
  • Fluency in English is required.
  • Knowledge of another UN language (e.g., French, Spanish) is an asset.
