The Danish Refugee Council (DRC), one of the world’s leading NGOs, with a focus on responding to displacement, have been registered in Sudan since 2004, delivering life-saving programming in protection, emergency response, shelter, food security and livelihoods, disaster risk reduction, camp management, and humanitarian mine action. DRC has implemented projects in Central Darfur, South Kordofan, Gedaref, Port Sudan, and White Nile. Sudan hosts one of the largest displaced populations in Africa, with over 3.7 million internally displaced people and over 1.1 million refugees from South Sudan, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Central African Republic, Chad, Yemen and Syria. Against a background of political crisis, Sudan faces economic and social turmoil, with sharp increases in food and energy costs, further exacerbated by disease outbreaks and ongoing conflict.

 

POSITION PROFILE

Plan, implement, monitor, and evaluate Economic Recovery (EcRec) project activities to ensure timely, high-quality deliverables, while fostering community participation, enhancing stakeholder coordination, and promoting sustainable agricultural and livelihood practices

 

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Implement program work plans in accordance with guidelines and schedules set by the EcRec team.
  • Strengthen and promote community engagement processes in project areas, including beneficiary identification, needs assessments, and resolution of community concerns.
  • Conduct and document regular monitoring of project activities in close coordination with the project team.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date records using standard templates provided by the EcRec Team Leader.
  • Adhere to DRC’s policies, procedures, and code of conduct at all times.
  • Promote value-added crop production (e.g., vegetables, grains, fruits) through the provision of targeted seeds and agricultural inputs.
  • Train beneficiaries in establishing kitchen gardens using the Climate-Smart Agriculture.
  • Enhance agricultural productivity through the setup and management of demonstration plots.
  • Establish and support seed multiplication sites to improve yields and promote sustainable farming practices.
  • Engage daily with beneficiaries in operational areas to identify and prioritize needs, and closely monitor implementation of agricultural activities.
  • Provide consistent technical advice to farmers, ensuring the adoption of best practices and long-term sustainability.
  • Mobilize community members to actively participate in all stages of program implementation for enhanced ownership and sustainability.
  • Support the creation of improved market linkages and information exchange through: Value chain assessments, Business "pitch" competitions, and Start-up grants
  • Develop and deliver training sessions for farmers’ groups, model farmers, and individuals on best agronomic practices.
  • Lead the distribution of agricultural inputs (seeds, tools) and livestock/livestock feed using a voucher-based approach.
  • Ensure that all interventions adhere to international and national quality standards and are technically and environmentally sound.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with RI and DRC staff; participate actively in regular team meetings.
  • Facilitate market access and information flow for entrepreneurs in agricultural and non-agricultural sectors to broaden their customer base.
  • Support the integration of entrepreneurship and life skills training within agricultural value chain support for individuals and farmer groups.
  • Provide regular training and mentorship to both new and existing entrepreneurs to support business establishment and growth.
  • Perform any other duties as assigned by the supervisor to support program goals.

Experience and technical competencies:

  • Degree or a diploma in Agriculture with additional training in agronomy.
  • At least 2 years of relevant experience in similar position preferably with an international NGO able to work with grass root communities in the field.
  • Excellent skills and experience in the assessment and supervision of agriculture projects at community level.
  • Computer literacy with good knowledge of office applications is required.
  • Creativity in program implementation with a demonstrated pattern of logical thinking.
  • Sincere and commitment to engaging women in community agricultural initiatives. 
  • Excellent knowledge of English and Arabic language is a must.
  • S/he must be willing to be based in the field and work closely with beneficiary communities.
