Organizational Setting

The Markets and Trade Division (EST) monitors and analyses developments and trends in international, regional and national agricultural commodity markets and the factors affecting them, collecting and disseminating up-to-date and comprehensive market and policy information for the major traded commodities and those important to food security. It also undertakes forward-looking outlook studies. The Division analyses issues that affect global food and agricultural markets and trade, including analysis of trade policies and agreements, and provides technical support and capacity development to FAO Members in all these areas. Through its Global Information and Early Warning System on Food and Agriculture (GIEWS), the Division is responsible for FAO's early warnings on food shortfalls and food security problems. EST is also responsible for the production of FAO flagship publication The State of Agricultural Commodity Markets (SOCO) and the OECD-FAO Agricultural Outlook. The Division houses the secretariats of the Committee on Commodity Problems (CCP) and its subsidiary Intergovernmental Groups (IGGs), the G20 Agricultural Market Information System (AMIS) and the World Banana Forum (WBF).


The position is located in the Markets and Trade Division at FAO Headquarters in Rome. The call for expression of interest aims at identifying highly qualified and motivated candidates to support communication activities of the Division.

Reporting Lines

The incumbent will work under the overall guidance of the Director of the Markets and Trade Division (EST), the direct supervision of the Senior Economist, and in close collaboration with the Office of Communications (OCC).

Technical Focus

Specific areas of technical focus include digital publishing, web and communication tasks. , .


Tasks and responsibilities

The incumbent will be responsible for a number of tasks in relation to web development, desktop publishing, graphic design, publishing processes and corporate events for EST, including\:

• Produce creative concept designs and layouts for EST publications;
• Support the Division’s Publication Workflow System (PWS) ensuring their adherence to corporate communications guidelines for EST publications;
• Collaborate with the EST Publications focal point to support colleagues in transitioning from a predominantly print publishing approach to making their research accessible online through interactive applications like Tableau, by providing design expertise and creating visually appealing, user-friendly interfaces;
• Provide visual communications support for the strategic development and effective delivery of corporate publications and knowledge sharing in diverse formats in close collaboration with the EST Communication Specialist;
• Support, in close collaboration with EST Digital Publishing Specialist, of all publications related to the OECD-FAO Guidance for Responsible Agricultural Supply Chains;
• Support colleagues creating design and layout for written and multimedia products (e.g., PPTs, banners, web pages) and promotional materials using visual identity and templates;
• Provide design support for social media (e.g., cards, GIFs and videos) and develop innovative reusable assets while conforming to FAO social media corporate guidelines;
• Support a wide range of products for various platforms including through the selection of representative photos for each visual

• Maintain liaison with the Office of Communication (OCC) through the Division’s Communications Specialist to ensure compliance with OCC standards, appropriate review and clearance processes;

Minimum Requirements

• University degree in media and communication and digital publishing
• Three years of relevant experience in communication and digital publishing
• Working knowledge (proficient - level C) of English
