Context

The International Finance Corporation (IFC) focuses on strengthening private sector development in the Western Balkans by providing investment and advisory services to drive economic growth and sustainable development. Working closely with governments and private sector partners, IFC supports efforts to enhance the investment climate, improve access to finance, advance regulatory reforms, and build institutional capacity to address key economic challenges.

In the region, IFC's strategic priorities focus on fostering sustainable economic development through three key pillars: Productivity, Inclusion, and Climate. To enhance productivity, IFC works to strengthen the investment climate, deepen financial markets, and encourage private sector participation in infrastructure, including export-oriented agriculture, eco-industrial parks, and logistics. By supporting the unbundling and commercialization of state-owned enterprises, particularly in the energy sector, and investing in the digital economy, IFC aims to improve efficiency and competitiveness. Inclusion efforts focus on empowering underserved populations, supporting MSMEs, and advancing gender finance, alongside initiatives to expand access to capital, affordable housing, healthcare, and education. In addressing climate challenges, IFC accelerates investments in clean energy, green urban development, and climate finance, aligning with the EU Taxonomy to mobilize private capital for a more sustainable and resilient future in the Western Balkans.
