Overview of position

Background:

  • The Microwave Links Systems Support will be working under the direct supervision of the Microwave Unit Supervisor in the Republic of South Sudan.

Job purpose:

  • The contracted personnel will be required to maintain the United Nations (UN) microwave network backbone infrastructure that connect critical locations in the mission.

Role objectives

Key responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Plan, test, install & maintain the UN digital microwave communication systems.

  • Experience in point to point & point to multipoint microwave links such as Harris / Stratex / Aviat / Cambium / Aprisa / Ericsson & Radwin digital microwave systems desirable.

  • Provide product specific training whenever required.

  • Be on call & provide 24 x 7 support to troubleshoot issues or problems when required especially during crisis & emergency situations.

  • Perform any other ICT duties & tasks as assigned by the supervisor.

The equipment the staff will program, install & maintain includes but is not limited to:

  • Digital microwave terminals in the range from 1 to 30 GHz.

  • Multiplexers, converters, fiber optic links & other termination equipment.

  • Microwave antennae.

  • Ancillary equipment used in microwave sites such as power supplies (good knowledge of AC & DC power), pressurization systems, order wire etc.

  • Monitoring, measuring, control equipment & software.

  • Installation, configuration & bench testing of microwave links before deploying to sites.

  • Routing of UTP cables, if cables & power cables.

  • Liaising with rigging unit regarding alignment of microwave links, deployment of relevant antennas & feeder lines on communication towers & masts.

  • Use software based link planning tools & network monitoring tools as deem necessary to perform required duties.

  • Assist with interconnection of microwave equipment with PABX, network routers & switches.

  • Assist with the termination of UTP, coaxial & power cables inclusive of the preparation of necessary connectors.

  • Install the required software on microwave equipment & perform software upgrades as & when required.

  • Perform routine maintenance of microwave links inclusive of interconnect cables & grounding connections.

Project reporting

The Microwave Links Systems Support will be working under the direct supervision of the Microwave Unit Supervisor.

Key competencies
  • Bachelors of science in electronic, telecommunication, computer engineering, computer science, information technology, or any other related field.

  • Must have at least 8 years of working experience relating to the required technical knowledge written above.

  • ITIL foundation certification is required.

  • Computer literate with proficiency in MS Office Suite, Aviat Network Portal, Cambium Link Planner and Network Updater, Radwin Manager, Ericsson Library Explorer & others.

  • Must have a national driver’s license & able to drive a light motor vehicle with manual transmission.

  • Must be fluent in English, both written & oral.

  • Excellent client orientation skills with attention to technical details.

  • Strong communication & organizational skills.

  • Detail oriented planning & high degree of accuracy & safety.

  • Works collaboratively with & supports colleagues / clients to achieve common goals.

Team management

This role has no team management responsibility.
