Mission and objectives

UN Women (the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women), grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.
UN Women’s normative and programmatic work, guided by the UN Women Global Strategic Plan (2022-2025) and Country Strategic Note (2021-2025), and supported by a consolidated organizational architecture, have been instrumental in advancing gender equality, improving women’s access to opportunities, rights and services in political, social and economic life, and combating gender stereotypes, discrimination and violence, as required by international and national legal and policy commitments. UN Women collaborates with numerous partners – government authorities, civil society organizations, including women’s organizations and platforms, academia, other UN agencies. It commits itself to the Leaving No One Behind principle, by supporting targeted actions to remove the obstacles that marginalized and vulnerable groups of women face in accessing their rights and to promote them as agents of change.

Context

UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.
The adoption of UN Security Council Resolution 1325 (UNSCR 1325) in 2000 calls for the full and equal participation of women in conflict prevention and peacebuilding processes. BiH has made significant improvements in promoting gender equality through various international commitments and national legal frameworks. Key achievements include the Gender Equality Law, the Gender Action Plan, and the ratification of the Istanbul Convention, which collectively enhance institutional practices for gender equality.

Since the adoption of UNSCR 1325, government and civil society organizations in BiH have worked tirelessly to raise awareness of women's roles in fostering lasting peace and social cohesion. Efforts to implement the Women, Peace, and Security (WPS) agenda have included three successive Action Plans (2010-2013, 2014-2018, and 2018-2022), transforming normative frameworks into practical actions. UN Women, together with IOM and UNFPA aim to contribute to advancing and accelerating WPS Agenda in Bosnia and Herzegovina in the period 2023 – 2026, through a joint project supported by the Peacebuilding Fund.
In addition to these efforts, Bosnia and Herzegovina committed to global development by endorsing the 2030 Agenda in 2015 and subsequently by adopting the SDG Framework in 2021 to facilitate the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This framework serves as a strategic foundation for fostering sustainable and inclusive growth across the country. UN Women has been instrumental in supporting initiatives aimed at addressing the disproportionate burden of unpaid care work on women and girls, which continues to be a significant barrier to achieving gender equality.

The Project Coordinator will be embedded within the Agency for Gender Equality of Bosnia and Herzegovina (GEABiH) and will provide administrative and logistical support for the effective implementation of activities under Outcome 1 of the GEAR-Up BiH Programme. Working in close coordination with UN Women, the Project Coordinator will assist in organizing meetings, workshops, trainings, and field visits; preparing and processing documentation such as Terms of Reference, payment requests, and procurement files; and supporting recruitment and procurement processes. The Project Coordinator will manage logistical arrangements, maintain organized project records, assist in drafting meeting minutes, and provide translation and interpretation support when necessary. Additionally, the Project Coordinator will support data entry and contribute to the preparation of reporting materials. The role will help ensure smooth coordination between GEABiH, UN Women, and other institutional partners, while aligning all administrative processes with internal procedures and timelines.
