Mission and objectives
As the guardian of the UN Convention against Transnational Organized Crime (UNTOC), the three International Drug Control Conventions and the UN Convention against Corruption (UNCAC), UNODC is mandated to support Member States in the implementation of measures to comply with the Conventions, as well as to coordinate regional and international drug control actions. To this end, UNODC has the expertise and capacity to assist Member States in combating drug trafficking and organized crime.
Context
This assignment offers a unique opportunity to support UNODC’s Alternative Development efforts in Lao PDR by strengthening the capacity of communities transitioning from illicit crop cultivation to sustainable livelihoods. The UN Volunteer (UNV) will assist enhancing community visibility and supporting market access through the development of outreach and promotional materials. By engaging with local stakeholders and showcasing community-led economic initiatives, the UNV will help foster inclusive development, build long-term resilience, and reduce vulnerability to illicit activities.
In addition, the UNV will support the Lao Transnational Organized Crime Project by assisting with communication, coordination, analytical research and administrative tasks related to priority areas such as cybercrime, trafficking in persons, migrant smuggling, and illicit trafficking. The role will involve supporting awareness-raising activities, preparing materials for stakeholder engagement, and helping circulate information to stakeholders and communicate the project’s achievements.
In addition, the UNV will support the Lao Transnational Organized Crime Project by assisting with communication, coordination, analytical research and administrative tasks related to priority areas such as cybercrime, trafficking in persons, migrant smuggling, and illicit trafficking. The role will involve supporting awareness-raising activities, preparing materials for stakeholder engagement, and helping circulate information to stakeholders and communicate the project’s achievements.
Task description
Under the direct supervision of the Alternative Development Programme’s Manager and the Head of Office / Programme Coordinator for Transnational Organized Crime, the UN Volunteer will undertake the following tasks:
· Assist in the development of communications and marketing materials that promote sustainable livelihoods and local products, particularly in communities transitioning from illicit crop cultivation. This includes supporting efforts to improve access to market information and enhance the visibility of community-based economic initiatives.
· Support stakeholder engagement by collaborating with community members, local authorities, and partners to ensure inclusive participation in economic development activities and promote awareness of local products and opportunities.
· Assist in organizing and providing logistical support for the Mekong MOU Workshop on Alternative Development, contributing to regional dialogue, knowledge exchange, and pol-icy coherence among member states.
· Support the implementation of activities under the Lao Transnational Organized Crime Project by assisting with training sessions, awareness-raising efforts, and related tasks focused on key threats such as cybercrime, trafficking in persons, migrant smuggling, ilicit trafficking of drugs and precursors and criminal justice.
· Assist in the development and dissemination of strategic communications products – including web stories, social media content, newsletters, infographics, and human-interest features – to raise awareness of UNODC’s work and highlight project achievements.
· Provide logistical and administrative support for workshops, field missions, and coordination meetings in collaboration with UNODC staff and national counterparts.
