The IRC Yemen began its programs in October 2012. Since establishing its presence in the South of Yemen, in the Red Sea Coastal city of Aden, the organization has grown from just an implementing small project to handling large scale emergency and relief operations. Following the war which broke out in Yemen in March of 2015 and the humanitarian disaster, which was crafted by the same, IRC launched one an emergency response program in the southern governorates of Aden, Lahj, Abyan, Shabwah and Aldalea.Currently IRC Yemen is operating in eight governorates in the south and north of Yemen and Sana’a and Hodeidah in the North through direct programming and through local partnerships, in Health, WASH, Nutrition, Child Protection, Gender and Women Protection and Empowerment.

The International Rescue Committee (IRC) have been working in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) for more than forty years. Today, the IRC has more than 2,200 staff working across the region, including in Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Syria, and Yemen to support those affected by some of the world’s most complex and protracted humanitarian crises.

SCOPE OF WORK:

Under the direct supervision of the Senior Environmental Health Officer, the Hygiene Promotion Assistant will be based in the West Coast and will support the implementation and monitoring of community-based hygiene promotion activities. The role includes active engagement in integrated WASH-Nutrition interventions, particularly targeting malnourished children and pregnant and lactating women (PLWs). Responsibilities include the supervision of Community Health Volunteers (CHVs), facilitation of hygiene behavior change communication, monitoring water quality (including chlorination in health facilities), and coordination of water trucking and sanitation support, in line with IRC’s life-saving and preventive programming..

JOB SUMMARY:

The Hygiene Promotion Assistant will support the daily implementation of hygiene promotion and WASH outreach activities, with a focus on nutrition-sensitive programming in high-need areas. This position plays a critical role in integrating hygiene promotion within IRC’s broader health and nutrition strategy in areas with high GAM/SAM prevalence. The assistant will ensure effective community engagement, monitor safe water interventions at the household and facility levels, and contribute to improving health outcomes through targeted hygiene promotion efforts.

WORKING RELATIONS:

Reports to: Senior Environmental Health Officer (West Coast)

Works closely with: Community Health Volunteers, Nutrition Officers, Health Facility staff, local WASH actors, and other IRC field teams.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES:

·Promote a respectful, inclusive, and safe working environment and uphold IRC’s safeguarding and code of conduct policies.

·Plan, implement, and monitor hygiene promotion and community mobilization activities at the household and community levels.

·Deliver joint hygiene promotion sessions with Health and Nutrition teams in priority sites (e.g., OTP/TSFP centers, outreach for PLWs).

·Supervise and mentor CHVs and hygiene promoters on integrated WASH-Nutrition behavior change messaging.

·Identify and follow up with vulnerable households (e.g., those with SAM children) for prioritized WASH support.

·Lead on the distribution of hygiene kits (HKs) and ensure proper beneficiary targeting, documentation, and post-distribution follow-up.

·Disseminate tailored IEC materials on key hygiene behaviors, including Baby WASH practices.

·Support and monitor water chlorination in health facilities and coordinate with suppliers to ensure timely water delivery.

·Participate in baseline/endline assessments, post-distribution monitoring, and hygiene promotion effectiveness surveys.

·Track hygiene kit distributions and ensure alignment with WASH and Nutrition Cluster standards.

·Ensure timely submission of weekly reports, attendance sheets, and payment documentation for CHVs.

·Perform any other duties assigned by the supervisor in support of integrated WASH, Health, and Nutrition programming.


Minimum Qualifications:

REQUIREMENTS: (Qualifications, Skills and Abilities):

A.Education:

·Bachelor’s degree is preferred in Environmental Health, Public Health, Environmental Sciences / Engineering, psychosocial counseling or a related field certificate working in a WASH program/ partner for 2years without the said degree might be considered

B.Experience:

·At least 2 years of experience in hygiene promotion, WASH, or community health programming in humanitarian.

C.Skills and Abilities:

·Strong interpersonal and communication skills; ability to work with diverse teams and communities.

·Experience in training and supervising community workers.

·Proficient in Arabic; working knowledge of English (written and spoken).

·Good command of Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel).

·Strong organizational skills and ability to handle pressure and competing priorities.

D.Proficiencies:

·Capacity to deliver hygiene promotion messages effectively to vulnerable populations.

·Problem-solving skills, flexibility, and cultural sensitivity.

·Commitment to IRC values and humanitarian principles.
