Mission and objectives

UNFPA works in more than 150 countries and territories that are home to the vast majority of the world’s people. Its mission: to ensure that every pregnancy is wanted, every childbirth is safe and every young person’s potential is fulfilled.

Guided by the 1994 Programme of Action of the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD), UNFPA partners with governments, civil society and other agencies to advance its mission. The ICPD Beyond 2014 Global Report, released in February 2014, revealed how much progress has been made and the significant work that remains to be done. The actions and recommendations identified in the report are crucial for achieving the goals of the ICPD Programme of Action and its linkage with the post-2015 development agenda.

Context

This assignment is designed within the transition between UNFPA’s Strategic Plan 2020–2025 and the new Strategic Plan 2026–2029, as well as the launch of the new UNFPA Country Programme for Mexico 2026–2030. The UN Youth Volunteer will support UNFPA Mexico’s Population and Development team in strengthening national capacities in demographic analysis, evidence generation, and strategic foresight, with the goal of informing human rights-based, gender-transformative, and intercultural public policy. In line with UNFPA’s commitment to the Youth, Peace and Security (YPS) agenda, the volunteer will also contribute to advancing youth participation in development planning and peacebuilding processes.

Mexico's ongoing demographic transition presents a critical window of opportunity to capitalize on the demographic dividend. Recognizing this, the UNFPA Mexico Country Office (CO) has identified a strategic need to enhance its programmatic efforts in population and development, particularly focusing on youth engagement and its intersection with the peace and security agenda. To effectively address these interconnected areas and maximize the potential of the demographic dividend, the CO aims to onboard a United Nations Volunteer (UNV). This dedicated individual will play a pivotal role in strengthening the office's capacity to develop, implement, and monitor impactful initiatives that address the evolving demographic landscape of Mexico. By integrating youth perspectives and fostering partnerships across sectors, the UNV will contribute to the advancement of sustainable development goals and promote a more peaceful and secure environment for all.

- Contribute to mapping and documenting good practices that enhance youth participation in development planning and peacebuilding, aligned with the YPS agenda.
- Contribute to the preparation of technical notes, infographics, presentations, and policy briefs on population dynamics, inequalities, and demographic resilience.
- Support the organization of technical workshops, working meetings, and participatory processes.
- Generate follow-up proposals for alliances and action routes aimed at fostering community resilience and youth empowerment, as part of social cohesion and conflict prevention strategies.
