Step into a critical role where you’ll translate global Civilian Self-Protection (CSP) guidance into practical, community-led strategies tailored to Sudan’s complex and rapidly evolving context. With ongoing conflict driving widespread displacement and heightened protection risks, this role demands innovative, decentralized, and locally driven approaches to enhance violence prevention and community safety.

What you will do:

Here are some of your specific responsibilities.

  • Lead the rollout and contextualization of NRC’s Civilian Self-Protection (CSP) approach in Sudan, ensuring community-led risk analysis, priority-setting, and action planning are embedded in protection programming.
  • Facilitate participatory workshops with displacement-affected communities (IDPs, refugees, host populations) to identify protection risks and co-develop civilian-led mitigation strategies.
  • Support the design and implementation of community-led projects (CLPs) selected through CSP processes, ensuring alignment with NRC’s PfV strategy and Sudan-specific protection priorities.
  • Strengthen linkages between CSP and ongoing protection monitoring, red flag systems, and individual protection assistance (IPA) mechanisms to enable timely responses to high-risk alerts.
  • Mentor and technically support Protection Officers/field teams implementing CSP activities, ensuring compliance with Safe and Inclusive Programming (SIP) standards.
  • Liaise with Area Managers, Protection Cluster, and other relevant stakeholders to ensure CSP complements broader protection of civilians (PoC) and peacebuilding strategies.
  • Lead the development of CSP-specific tools, templates, and SOPs adapted to Sudan’s context (e.g., seasonal calendars, risk mapping templates, action plan formats).
  • Regularly monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of CSP activities, collect lessons learned, and contribute to donor reports and global CSP learning efforts.
  • Support in identifying and developing CSP pilot sites and scaling strategies, working in collaboration with MEL and Grants teams.

What you will bring:

  • University degree in International Relations, Humanitarian Affairs, Law, Social Sciences, Protection Studies, Peacebuilding, or other related fields.
  •  5 years and Strong technical knowledge and practical experience with Civilian Self-Protection, Protection of Civilians, or Community-Led Protection models.
  • Demonstrated ability to facilitate community-based protection analysis and co-design of mitigation strategies in displacement settings.
  • Experience designing or supporting early warning mechanisms, or other community-linked alert pathways.
  • Ability to bridge humanitarian protection with peacebuilding, conflict sensitivity, or durable solutions approaches is highly desirable.
  • Excellent facilitation and coaching skills to build CSP capacity within NRC teams and local partners.
  • Knowledge of Sudan’s conflict dynamics and community structures is a strong asset.
  • Proficiency in English is required; Arabic is desirable

  • Contract: 1 year
  • Travel: 30%
