Under the direct supervision and guidance of the Director of Maritime Safety Division, the incumbent will:

1. Direct and supervise the activities of the Sub-Division for Marine Technology and Cargoes (MTC) through Head of Marine Technology and Goal-based Standards (GBS), and Head of Cargoes and Technical Cooperation Coordination;

2. Supervise the work of the SDC, SSE and CCC Sub-Committees, and related groups;

3. Manage overall the regulatory work,  mandatory and recommendatory, related to the safety of ships, including maritime autonomous surface ships (MASS), fishing vessels and domestic ferries; the maritime transport of cargoes and containers, including dangerous goods; the development of a safety regulatory framework to support the reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from ships using new technologies and alternative fuels; and GBS and Formal Safety Assessment (FSA), including audit-related matters;

4. Assume general responsibility for matters relating to the personnel and the budget of the Sub-Division; and assist in the formulation of the Sub-Division’s overall strategy and work programme by preparing programme proposal documents and acting, as required, in an advisory capacity to the Director of the Division;

5. Co-ordinate the relevant work of the Division in preparing for, servicing and following up on meetings of the Maritime Safety Committee (MSC) and its subsidiary bodies, the Council, the Assembly, UN meetings and any diplomatic conferences to establish or revise relevant IMO instruments, as and when required;

6. Manage overall the contribution of the Sub-Division to capacity building activities related to the safety of ships, including fishing vessels and domestic ferries; the maritime transport of cargoes and containers; the implementation of the Polar Code; the development of a safety regulatory framework to support the reduction of GHG emissions from ships, in consultation and partnerships, in particular, with the World maritime University (WMU), the International Maritime Law Institute (IMLI);

7. Lead and take action for the efficient delivery of information to Member Governments, the UN and its specialized agencies, international organizations, industry, research establishments etc., and to other section of the Secretariat on matters falling within the purview of the Sub-Division;

8. Represent the Organization at outside conferences, seminars, symposia, training courses, meetings and similar events; provide specific information, lecture or present papers on IMO-related subjects; organize events for which the Sub Division has been assigned responsibility, as directed;

9. Lecture at WMU, IMLI and other training institutions set up by, or associated with, the Organization, as required;

10. Carry out missions to Member States on specific assignments and perform other related duties, as required;

11. Deputize for the Director of the Division as and when required; and

12. Perform any other related duties, as required.
