What we do

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) works worldwide to provide protection and humanitarian assistance to people affected by conflict and armed violence. We take action in response to emergencies and, at the same time, promote respect for international humanitarian law. We are an independent and neutral organization, and our mandate stems essentially from the Geneva Conventions of 1949. We work closely with National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and with their International Federation in order to ensure a concerted, rational and rapid humanitarian response to the needs of the victims of armed conflict or any other situation of internal violence. We direct and coordinate the international activities conducted in these situations.

Purpose

The Health Field Officer contributes to the monitoring of the health needs in the region of the Kordofan and the timely response to those needs. It is done in cooperation with the health team, Field Team Leader (FTL Kadugli and Head of Sub delegation (HoSD) according to the capacity of the sub-structure/sub delegation and in line with the Sudan Health strategy for 2024/2025. The HFO oversee the programs and/or deliver services with a degree of autonomy and contributes actively to planning, coordinating, and reporting on health activities at field level.

Accountabilities & functional responsibilities

  • Monitor the health situation in the region and reports in a timely manner any impact clashes might have on the health system (e.g.: mass influx of weapon wounded, attacks on health facilities, etc.). The HFO2 assist the sub-structure/sub delegation in facilitating the health response.
  • Liaises and builds networks with local stakeholders to facilitate communication and coordination of activities, ensuring efficient implementation of health programs.
  • Represents the ICRC vis-à-vis national health authorities. Contributes to representing ICRC in health coordination fora, as well as during meetings with state ministry of health (SMoH).
  • Assists the FTL Kadugli/HoSD and the Health Coordinator in designing operational strategies and planning the health program(s) in the Kordofan. Implements health programs within his/her geographic area.
  • Conducts assessments and regular field visits to monitor activities and health-related threats to the population.
  • Ensures proper management of information collected and appropriate, relevant reporting.
  • Participates in analysis of and reflection on the overall health situation of the sub-structure/sub delegation; contributes to realistic project proposals in line with the defined objectives and priorities.
  • Helps organize meetings with health stakeholders; Interprets at meetings and translates documents into local language if needed.
  • Advises staff members on various matters such as culture, politics, the economy, security, etc.

Desired profile and skills

  • Able to work under pressure in a potentially dangerous environment

Certifications / Education required

  • Bachelor’s degree in medicine or nursing.
  • Qualifications in public health or health management a strong asset.
  • Fluent written and spoken command of the local working language as well as English.
  • Registered with the Sudan Medical Council

Professional experience required

  • 3 to 5 years of total work experience (including 2 years of clinical experience) with minimum 2 years’ experience in the humanitarian sector.
  • Good connections with local health authorities or groups of interest for the ICRC.
  • Excellent knowledge of the assigned geographic area.
