Mission and objectives

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) aims to help ensure that emergency response saves lives and protects people in crisis. OCHA also seeks to enhance the connectivity and coherence between humanitarian and development work, based on the comparative advantage of diverse actors and in support of national and local capacity, towards collective outcomes that reduce risks, needs and vulnerability.

OCHA Colombia works to ensure that evidence-based and collective situational awareness informs decisions on humanitarian action, seeking to ensure that streamlined data and analysis is provided to inform a rapid, effective and principled response. OCHA Colombia works to facilitate enough, timely, substantial, predictable and flexible financing that meets the needs of the most vulnerable people. In accordance with its mandate, OCHA undertakes advocacy on behalf of the most vulnerable people to ensure effective and principled humanitarian action. This advocacy contributes to action that also enhances the protection of affected people.

Context

The assignment context for a position working for OCHA (United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs) would typically involve providing support to humanitarian response efforts, coordination of humanitarian activities, information management, advocacy, and policy development related to humanitarian crises and emergencies. This could include support roles in information management, analyst, reporting, coordination among other activities. The work may involve collaborating with various stakeholders including UN agencies, governments, NGOs, and affected communities to ensure effectiveness.

Task description

Under the direct supervision of Barbara Batista, Head of Office (OIC), the UN Volunteer will undertake the following tasks:

• Contribute to strengthening the efforts of the OCHA´s mandate by supporting the work at the national and departmental level with the different units (coordination, analysis/communications, and information management).
• Provide logistical and substantive support in the development of workshops and seminars at the country and regional levels.
• Support convening coordination meetings, prepare documents, hold pre-meetings, take notes, and follow up agreements.
• Play the role of facilitator and make presentations, when required.
• Support the development, review, and editing of key messages, talking points, donor reports, weekly humanitarian situation reports, humanitarian situation, and response presentations, as well as other documents required within the framework of OCHA Colombia's programmatic activities.
• Contributes to the preparation of various unit products, especially during the Humanitarian Programme Cycle (HPC) process, including analysis notes, reports, and inputs for information products, establishing necessary links with field coordination colleagues and other key actors.
• Support processes related to the flagship initiative, especially on localization and anticipatory actions.
• Among other activities as required.
