Mission and objectives
The UN Resident Coordinator (RC) system encompasses all organizations of the United Nations system dealing with operational activities for development, regardless of their formal presence in the country. The RC system aims to bring together the different UN agencies to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of operational activities at the country level.
Context
Within the delegated authority and under the supervision of the Senior Economist, the UNV Economic Assistant will be responsible for delivering at least six Jamaican Economy Panel (JEP) discussion papers over 12 months, providing support to the Senior Economist to disseminate the key findings within and outside of the United Nations, and to work alongside and with the support of other Resident Coordinator's Office (RCO) colleagues on projects to support RCO and Regional Coordinating Team supported UN Country Team initiatives (e.g. inputs to the annual report, support to the delivery of the annual partnership forum and timely partnership meetings, and support to external meetings that may involve government, international development partners - inc. International Financial Institutions -, and other development partners. UN Volunteers are also strongly encouraged to integrate the UN Volunteers programme mandate within their assignment and promote voluntary action through engagement with communities in the course of their work.
Task description
Under the direct supervision of the Senior Economist, the UN Volunteer will undertake the following tasks:
Delivering at least six Jamaican Economy Panel (JEP) discussion papers over 12 months, focused on sustainable development, with a special consideration to climate action given its importance to Jamaica and the sub-region. See https://jamaica.un.org/en/260754-jamaican-economy-panel-discussions
With the support of the Senior Economist, this will involve identifying the theme, working closely and collaboratively with UN Agencies, developing and distributing a survey questionnaire to JEP members, as well as collating and analysing their responses.
Developing a draft Jamaican Economy Panel (JEP) paper that incorporates an analysis of the survey findings, a related press release, and a blog/Op-Ed for public release.
Utilizing graphic design tools to design the Jamaican Economy Panel (JEP) discussion paper for online publication.
To work closely with the RCO Communications Officer to support the release and dissemination of the Jamaican Economy Panel (JEP) to internal and public audiences.
Providing support to the Senior Economist, by:
Promoting the findings of the Jamaican Economy Panel (JEP) publications both across and outside of the United Nations, by assisting the development of bespoke articles, information, and guidance notes, organizing thematic events, as well as identifying and exploring new innovative opportunities to promote selected sustainable development issues, notably on climate, gender, and food security.
To provide support on other RCO-related workstreams, notably related to climate, gender, and food security issues under the supervision of RCO Team members, e.g., this will include topics of strategic importance to the new UN Multi-Sector Development Cooperation Plan as assigned by the supervisor.
Integrating the UN Volunteers programme mandate:
Strengthen their knowledge and understanding of the concept of volunteerism by reading relevant UNV and external publications and taking an active part in UNV activities (for instance, in events that mark International Volunteer Day).
Become acquainted with and build on traditional and/or local forms of volunteerism in the host country.
Provide annual and end-of-assignment self-reports on UN Volunteer actions, results, and opportunities.
Contribute articles/write-ups on field experiences and submit them for UNV publications/websites, newsletters, press releases, etc.
Assist with the UNV Buddy Programme for newly arrived UN Volunteers.
Promote or advise local groups in the use of online volunteering or encourage relevant local individuals and organizations to use the UNV Online Volunteering service whenever technically possible.
