Organizational Context

According to the IFRC Policy on the Engagement of Interns, Trainees and Fellows (2024), internships are learning opportunities that allow students or recent graduates to gain exposure to IFRC’s humanitarian work and apply academic knowledge in professional settings under the supervision of experienced IFRC staff.

The purpose of this internship is to support the PMER & Quality Assurance Unit and the Office of the Deputy Regional Director in the formulation of new programme proposals for the Americas region and in the development of key products that ensure compliance with IFRC planning, monitoring, evaluation, and reporting (PMER) standards.

Job Purpose

The intern will provide direct support to the PMER Unit and the Office of the Deputy Regional Director by contributing to the development of new programme proposals for the Americas region, ensuring they are aligned with IFRC’s strategic priorities and donor requirements. The role will also involve enhancing the PMER framework in the region through the mapping and refinement of monitoring tools, as well as supporting capacity building by assisting in the organization and delivery of training on PMER practices. In addition, the intern will help strengthen organizational knowledge by documenting lessons learned, best practices, and case studies, while also reviewing and updating PMER processes, guidelines, and templates to ensure their continued relevance. Finally, the intern will support the overall quality of IFRC’s reporting by proofreading and ensuring accuracy, clarity, and compliance with organizational standards.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

- Helping and facilitating the formulation of new program proposals for the Americas region: Supporting the design and development of programmatic proposals by coordinating inputs from technical teams, consolidating data and evidence, and ensuring alignment with IFRC’s strategic priorities and donor requirements.

- Assisting with the Mapping and Development of Monitoring Tools: Mapping and compiling existing M&E systems across IFRC projects in the region. Creating or refining tools and methodologies for effective monitoring of project activities, ensuring alignment with the IFRC's strategic objectives and compliance with PMER standards.

- Facilitating Capacity Building Initiatives: Helping to organize and conduct training sessions on PMER practices, tools, and techniques to enhance staff and volunteer skills in monitoring and evaluation, data collection, and analysis.

 

Job Duties and Responsibilities (continued)

- Supporting Knowledge Management and Learning: Contributing to the documentation of lessons learned, best practices, and case studies to support organizational learning and the continuous improvement of PMER practices.

- Updating PMER-related processes and manuals: Regularly reviewing and updating PMER-related processes and documents to ensure they remain relevant and effective. This includes revising guidelines, templates, and manuals based on new insights, feedback from stakeholders, or changes in organizational strategy.

- Proofreading Reports: Ensuring the accuracy, clarity, and quality of various reports before their final submission.

Education

Bachelor’s degree in Economics, Statistics, International Relations, Disaster Management, or other field relevant to humanitarian assistance (preferred).

Experience

  • Experience in research, information management, data structuring, and report writing.
  • Familiarity with humanitarian assistance and the IFRC / Red Cross Red Crescent Movement (preferred).
  • Understanding of monitoring, evaluation, and reporting processes in a humanitarian or development context (preferred).

Knowledge, Skills and Languages

Languages

  • Advance level of English and Spanish (required).

  • Knowledge of disaster preparedness and response sectors (e.g., relief, food security, disaster risk reduction, climate resilience).
  • Strong analytical and strategic thinking skills, with the ability to synthesize complex information.

  • Capacity to collaborate effectively with teams and stakeholders across multiple countries.

Competencies, Values and Comments

The intern will work five days per week for a period of six months, from 1 October 2025 to 31 March 2026. Working days and hours shall be determined with the line manager in accordance with IFRC’s Flexible Working Arrangement policy.
