Duties and Responsibilities

DPSS supports the overarching goals of the Department by setting standards and providing specialized support to UNSMS operations in the areas of physical security, training, coordination of close protection services, critical incident stress management, and the promotion of road safety. It also takes the lead in the department’s innovations and digital transformation. and information management. The Division is critical in leveraging resources and expertise to enable the UN’s work around the world in support of the Department’s goals and objectives. The Road Safety Unit (RSU) is responsible for coordinating the implementation of the United Nations Road Safety Strategy across the UN system and is responsible for delivering the change management and strategic coordination in collaboration with the Inter-Agency Working Group on Road Safety, relevant UN and external partners, through the establishment of new policies, improved data analysis, advocacy, partnership building, and assistance on fleet management. The duration of the internship is for a period of three (3) to six (6) months , depending on the needs of the Department. The internship is UNPAID and full-time. Interns work five days (35 hours) per week under the supervision of a staff member in the office to which they are assigned. This internship is designed to be in person and full-time (35 hours or more). It can however be adapted to accommodate remote/hybrid arrangements and/or part-time arrangements (20 hours per week) on an exceptional basis at the request of the successful candidate. Within assigned authority, the intern is expected to undertake the following duties: • Support the planning, coordination, and implementation of complex components of road safety initiatives. • Conduct research, analyze data, and prepare summaries and reports on programme activities and outcomes. • Assist in the preparation, review, and monitoring of programme and budget proposals; ensure compliance with guidelines and propose adjustments as needed. • Draft and coordinate the clearance and publication of programme reports in multiple languages. • Serve as a focal point for project coordination, liaising across various departments to manage administrative and logistical tasks, including personnel recruitment, travel, training, payments, and procurement. • Maintain and update programme databases and records; generate reports, statistical analyses, and briefing materials for internal use and external review. • Provide general support to other programmes within the division as required. In summary, the intern will play a key role in supporting the day-to-day administration and coordination of the UN Road Safety Programme and the implementation of the UN Road Safety Strategy across the UN system.

Qualifications/special skills

To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, applicants must meet the following conditions: (a) be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or (b) be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent); or (c) have graduated with a university degree (as defined above). The UN shall be entitled to all property rights, including but not limited to patents, copyrights, and trademarks, regarding material which bears a direct relation to or is made in consequence of, the services provided under the internship. At the request of the UN, the interns shall assist in securing such property rights and transferring them to the UN in compliance with the requirements of the applicable law. • Respect the impartiality and independence required of the UN and of the receiving department/office and shall not seek or accept instructions regarding the services performed under the internship agreement from any Government or from any authority external to the UN. • Unless otherwise authorized by the appropriate official in the receiving department/office, they may not communicate at any time to the media or to any institution, person, Government or any other external source any information which has become known to them by reason of their association with the UN or the receiving department/office, that they know or ought to have known has not been made public. They may not use any such information without the written authorization of the appropriate official, and such information may never be used for personal gain. Proficiency in MS Office 365 (Word, Excel, PowerPoint). Familiarity with MS Power BI, Power Apps, Power Automate, Dataverse is an asset. Knowledge of data modeling, visualization, or data governance principles is desirable. Strong analytical, drafting, and communication skills. Ability to work collaboratively in a multicultural environment.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the internship advertised, fluency in English (both oral and written) is required.
