Duties and Responsibilities

This internship is located in the Sustainable Energy Division (SED) of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) in Geneva, Switzerland. This internship is designed to be in-person and full-time, for a duration of minimum 04 months and maximum 06 months, during the period from 17 November 2025 to 15 May 2026. The UNECE Sustainable Energy Division works to promote a sustainable energy development strategy for the ECE region, with the following objectives: • Sustained access to high quality energy services for all individuals in the ECE region; • Security of energy supplies in the short-, medium- and long-term; • Facilitate a transition to a more sustainable energy future and introduce renewable energy sources to reduce health and environmental impacts resulting from the production, transport and use of energy; • Well-balanced energy network systems across the whole of the ECE tailored to optimize operating efficiencies and overall regional cooperation; • Sustained improvements in energy efficiency, in production and use, particularly in countries with economies in transition; and • In the context of post-EU enlargement, the integration of energy restructuring, legal, regulatory and energy pricing reforms, as well as of the social dimension into energy policy making. The intern is expected to contribute to the work of the UN Development Account Project, “Enhancing capacities in the sustainable production of the critical raw materials required for low-carbon transition” and the following project outputs in particular: • Preparation of policy guidance and best practices tool kits for sustainable production, including gender and social aspects, focusing on (i) Enhancing sustainability and security and (ii) Promoting innovation and circularity of critical raw materials aligned to UNRMS. • Organization of workshops organized jointly by UNECE and UNESCAP to disseminate knowledge on the sustainable production of critical raw materials to stakeholders at various levels. • Multi-stakeholder partnerships through surveys (questionnaires), interviews and interactive events to foster joint action on the sustainable production of critical raw materials. • Development of six country-specific capacity-building plans and strategies for the sustainable production of selected critical raw materials jointly • Organization of training courses to enhance the knowledge and skills of mining professionals, government officials, and local communities on the best practices and technologies for sustainable mining and mineral processing. • Development of UNRMS-based country-specific case studies on the sustainable production of selected critical raw materials. • Contribute to the development of presentations and articles, ensuring that innovative practices and project achievements are effectively shared with stakeholders and the wider public.

Qualifications/special skills

Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent). Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required. Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master’s or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PH.D. Programme, relevant to the field of work within the Division. Do you meet any of the above criteria? If yes, please indicate which one and attach proof to the application. Applicants must have good knowledge of standard software applications, especially MS Word, MS PowerPoint and MS Teams. Experience with AI as well as the ability to draft news articles and/or social media posts is desirable.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship, fluency in spoken and written English is required. Working knowledge of French or Russian is an advantage. Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
