Mission and objectives

Through its unique coordination, operational and normative mandate, UNMAS works across the humanitarian-development-peace nexus to protect people from the threat of explosive ordnance, prevent resurgence of violence, strengthen national capacities and enable sustainable solutions to mine action until UN assistance is no longer requested. Strategic Outcome 1: Coherent approaches to mine action are delivered. Strategic Outcome 2: Protection from the risks and impacts of explosive ordnance is strengthened. Strategic Outcome 3: Victims3 of explosive ordnance have equal access to relevant social services and participate fully in social and economic life

Context

The assistant works in the UNMAS Colombia Programme. The assignment is for 12 months, and the assistant works five days a week. In the Colombian context since the signature of the landmark peace agreement in 2016, mine action interventions are focussing on “post-conflict” areas of the country, always taking into consideration the maximization of its impact in the three dimensions of the nexus, humanitarian, sustaining peace, and development, to ensure long term sustainability.

The programme aims to provide technical assistance to Colombia's humanitarian mine action sector to deliver a more robust and holistic response to affected communities and contribute to broader protection, security and peace-building objectives.

UNMAS Colombia’s technical assistance also includes coordinating the humanitarian mine action Area of Responsibility (MA AoR) of the humanitarian architecture, supporting the protection cluster and other humanitarian for a, assisting the socio-economic reintegration of former FARC-EP combatants through employment in humanitarian mine action, and supporting the coordination and integration of humanitarian mine action matters at the regional level.
