Mission and objectives

UNFPA is the United Nations sexual and reproductive health agency. Our mission is to deliver a world where every pregnancy is wanted, every childbirth is safe and every young person's potential is fulfilled.

Context

Adolescents' and young people's low level of knowledge about sexual and reproductive health, their poor access to reproductive health services, the lack of health facilities offering sexual and reproductive health services adapted to young people's needs, and the shortage of staff trained to provide youth-sensitive sexual and reproductive health services are all major development challenges.

The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) in Burundi is currently implementing the 9th BURUNDI-UNFPA Cooperation Program covering the period 2024-2027. This program can be consulted at https://burundi.unfpa.org

This program aims to improve the quality of reproductive health care and services, strengthen national mechanisms and the capacities of institutions and actors to combat discriminatory social and gender norms, build the skills and capacities of young people, and improve the production and use of data to support national planning. This will accelerate progress towards UNFPA's three transformative outcomes.

To support the successful implementation of the ninth program, UNFPA seeks to strengthen its team in the areas of Youth Peace and Security. The UN Volunteer (UNV) will play a key role in this process by building strategies to engage youth in durable peace and security initiatives to support the office's support to the government.

Task description

Under the overall supervision of the UNFPA Burundi Resident Representative and direct supervision of the MH-RHCS Technical Specialist / Program Coordinator and in close collaboration with colleagues from Operations and Programs, the Youth, Peace and Security Associate will support the overall effective functioning the country’s office portfolio, through the development of a comprehensive youth engagement in peace and security initiatives while ensuring compliance with UNFPA mandate, rules and procedures.

The UN Youth Volunteer will undertake the following tasks:

Supports the coordination and implementation of youth, peace, and security-related activities within the UNFPA country office's program.

Contributes to research, analysis, and drafting of concept notes, proposals, and reports related to youth engagement in peacebuilding and conflict prevention.

Assists in organizing and facilitating workshops, training sessions, and dialogues for young people on peace and security themes.

Supports the drafting process of strategic documents on youth engagement for peace and security in Burundi and the subregion.

Participates in field missions and stakeholder meetings to gather information, build partnerships, and monitor program activities related to youth, peace, and security.

As part of a team, the UN Youth Volunteer will help strengthen partnerships with youth organizations, civil society, government entities, and other UN agencies on youth, peace, and security initiatives.
