THE OPPORTUNITY
The Legal Counsel, Shared Services, will be based in Toronto, Ontario, and will report to the Senior Legal Counsel, Legal & Compliance Shared Services, Canada. This individual will be part of the Legal and Compliance Shared Services team, supporting the Foundation in its commercial, non-charitable initiatives operations, including vendor contracting, regulatory compliance, and process/policy.
WAYS YOU CAN CONTRIBUTE
Provide legal and business risk assessment and analysis on a range of commercial matters, including IT, IP, vendor procurement, data privacy, and various operational projects, as legal support for the Foundation
Negotiate, draft, and review a range of customer business and commercial agreements, including vendor agreements, partnerships, etc., while identifying internal legal and business risks and recommending solutions
Foster and build strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders
Work cross-functionally and across operational lines with colleagues in Canada and several jurisdictions within Africa, and beyond, with flexibility, adaptability
Ability to prioritize and pivot in changing environments
Train and educate internal stakeholders on processes, risks, and changes in law and process on an ongoing basis
Drive process improvements and efficiencies, own and execute solutions to support strategy. and increase collaboration in pursuit of shared Foundation goals.
WHO YOU ARE
You are a lawyer in good standing, qualified to practice in Ontario, with a JD/LLB from an accredited law school
You have a minimum of 5 to 10 years of relevant legal experience
You are motivated and a self-starter who takes the initiative to get things done. You are a true professional.
You have excellent communication skills. You know how to explain concepts and issues, while communicating effectively with a range of groups across cultural lines with patience, kindness, and respect.
You are a solutions-oriented problem solver. You can work flexibly and under pressure with tight deadlines. You have keen business insight and enjoy sharing knowledge to help bolster teams and increase efficiencies.
You have strong drafting, writing, and negotiating skills across a range of complex commercial contracts, and you can analyze and identify the core legal and business issues and risks.
You have working knowledge and growing expertise in corporate/commercial, technology/IT, IP, AI, data privacy, and you also possess practical business sense.
You are a true team player, willing to take on responsibilities, no matter how small or significant.
You are grounded and possess professional maturity, as well as an elevated sensitivity and awareness of global cultures. You have impeccable integrity, and your worldview aligns with the Foundation’s values.
