Duties and Responsibilities

This internship is in the Office of the Under-Secretary-General for Global Communications (OUSG) within the Department of Gobal Communications (DGC). DGC is responsible for telling the UN story across multiple platforms, digital and traditional, to build support for the aims and work of the United Nations. Through their global operations and offices in 60 countries, DGC reaches millions of people with trusted, objective information and an inclusive message that enables the public, civil society, private sector and Member States to engage in the work of the United Nations. The incumbent will report to the Special Assistant in the OUSG. Within delegated authority, the public information intern may be responsible for the following duties: • Support the end-to-end production of the United Nations’ Awake At Night (AAN) podcast, including planning, recording, editing, publishing, and publicizing episodes. • Monitor best practices and emerging trends in podcasting, and provide recommendations to enhance AAN’s format, reach, and impact. • Conduct research to identify opportunities for audience growth and strategic outreach, including partnerships and cross-promotion. • Research and draft compelling biographies for potential and confirmed podcast guests. • Capture behind-the-scenes photos and video content during podcast production, events, and interviews. • Assist in the creation of engaging multimedia content (including social media assets) to promote AAN across platforms. • Maintain organized archives of podcast episodes, promotional materials, and guest information. • Contribute to brainstorming and content development sessions for future episodes and campaigns. • Assist with other tasks related to AAN and the Office of the Under-Secretary-General (OUSG) as assigned. Applicants who are children or siblings of a staff member shall not be eligible to apply for an internship at the United Nations. - Familiarity with and/or interest in taking digital photographs is desirable. - Familiarity with Canva, Trello, PowerPoint, and/or Adobe Photoshop (or graphic design programmes) is desirable. Interns will need to provide all necessary hardware (computer), software and internet connection to perform the internship remotely.

Qualifications/special skills

To qualify for an internship with the United Nations New York Headquarters Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met: - Applicants must: (a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or, (b) be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor's level or equivalent). - Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required. Please list your area of study. - Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master’s or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PH.D. Programme. Do you meet any of the above criteria? If yes, please indicate which one and attach proof to the application. Please note that you will have to provide an official certificate at a later stage. - Familiarity and demonstrated interest in podcasting. - Familiarity with taking and editing videos and digital photographs is desirable. - Familiarity with the use of social media in a professional context is desirable. - Familiarity with Canva, Trello, PowerPoint, and/or Adobe Photoshop (or other graphic design programmes) is desirable. - Awareness of current trends in podcasting and digital engagement, with a curiosity to explore new formats and platforms. - Ability to work collaboratively in a multicultural environment, with sensitivity to diverse perspectives and global issues. - Organizational skills and attention to detail, especially when managing multiple tasks or deadlines.

Languages

English or French are the working languages of the United Nations. For the internship advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official language of the United Nations (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian and Spanish) or Portuguese, Kiswahili or Hindi is desirable.

Intern Specific text

Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations. Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions. Interns who are not citizens or permanent residents of the country where the internship is undertaken, may be required to obtain the appropriate visa and work/employment authorization. Successful candidates should discuss their specific visa requirements before accepting the internship offer.
