Duties and Responsibilities
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. UNEP's mission is to provide leadership and encourage partnership in caring for the environment by inspiring, informing, and enabling nations and peoples to improve their quality of life without compromising that of future generations. The Latin America and the Caribbean Office (UNEP LACO) located in Panama City works closely with the 33 countries of the region - including 16 small island developing States, with a population of about 650 million people. The office works to serve the needs of the region, and its activities are integrated into the work programs approved by the United Nations Environment Assembly of UN Environment (UNEA). The UNEP Climate Change Sub-programme works to support countries in transitioning towards low-emission and climate-resilient development pathways. Within the Climate Change Sub-programme, UNEP implements a range of initiatives and projects in Latin America and the Caribbean, including the advancement of green hydrogen economies, the development and implementation of carbon markets and Article 6 mechanisms, ecosystem-based adaptation approaches for water security, and support for national adaptation planning processes. Furthermore, the UNEP Climate Change Sub-programme is committed to ensuring that crosscutting issues such as gender equity and women empowerment are effectively integrated into the development of these initiatives to guarantee equitable and inclusive climate action in line with its mitigation and adaptation objectives. In this context, the UNEP Latin America and the Caribbean Office is seeking an intern to support its Climate Action Programme with a focus on mitigation and adaptation. Interns are sought for a six-month internship period. The internship is UNPAID and full-time. Interns work five days per week (40 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the Office. Under the direct supervision of the Regional Sub-programme Coordinator on Climate Action, of the Latin America and the Caribbean Office, the intern will be supporting the following projects and initiatives: • Advancing a Regional Approach to the Green Hydrogen Economy in Latin America and the Caribbean. • Support for the Development of Integral Carbon Markets (Euroclima LAC). • Capacity Building to prepare for the implementation of Carbon Markets and Article 6 in Latin America (LAC-6). • Fostering climate change adaptation in Panama through ecosystem approach for water security at the water basin level – Resilient watersheds. • Building capacities for the development of the National Adaptation Plan in the context of the NDCs adaptation themes in Panama. • Agreements, processes, and tools to move towards a climate-resilient society in El Salvador.
