Salary:

Approximately £40,487 net per annum, (subject to deductions), free of income tax in the UK. Excellent benefits including medical insurance and UN pension scheme.

Purpose for the Post

Under the immediate supervision of the Supervisor, French Word Processing Unit, the incumbent will carry out a variety of duties, including covering the Deputy Supervisor in their absence. 

Main Duties and Responsibilities

1. Proofread complex and lengthy French texts for precision, quality and conformity with established standards and policies, ensuring that processing and editorial changes have been accurately and successively incorporated and are reflected in the final version. 

2. Edit, insert corrections, format and prepare lengthy documents, which include complex tables, reports, special layouts, merging, collating, etc., adapting to technological developments notably in the field of CAT tools (eLUNa).

3. Verify the grammar syntax, references mentioned, concordance of French text with the original document to ensure an accurate translation, style, punctuation, and spelling following IMO and in-house guidelines.

4. Assist the French Translation Section with compiling documents and checking references.

5. Assist the supervisor/deputy supervisor in registering and distributing urgent work when required, adhering to work meeting deadlines at all times.

6. Consult editors, translators, and revisers in case of omissions or discrepancies between the original and the translated text and make proposals.

7. Check that all components of the original (source) text are correctly reflected in the final edited/translated document and process in their appropriate platform.

8. Align bi-texts to support the production of high-quality translation memories for computer-assisted translation tools (Document Storage, eLUNa) and related workflow improvements.

9. Convert texts into different formats using various software programs (MS Office & PDF) and verify the converted text.

10. Brief, train, and support new staff and temporary employees on work procedures or any queries that they might have, formats and routine office arrangements.

11. Deal efficiently with high volumes of documents and work independently in order to meet competing document deadlines.

12. When covering for the Deputy Supervisor or in charge of night shifts, the incumbent will act as team leader, organize and distribute documents, enter relevant data into gDoc on reception/completion of documents, ensure that documents are correctly proofread, filed and transferred electronically to the Documents Section. 

13. Perform any other duties as required for the effective operation of the unit, including document processing and routine office arrangements.

Proficiency in English.

Professional Experience

At least six years of relevant professional experience as a Proofreader is essential. Experience in deputizing/covering a senior staff member would be an asset. Understanding of the use of computer assisted translation tools would be an asset. Experience in similar work in an International Organization or within the UN system would be an asset. Experience in providing training or guidance on work procedures would be an asset. 

Education

Secondary education or equivalent to university entrance standard.

Language Skills

Excellent command of French both written and oral to mother tongue standard with excellent knowledge of grammar and spelling is essential. Proficient in English, both written and oral is essential. Working knowledge of any other official UN language would be an asset.

Other Skills

Excellent proofreading and formatting skills are essential. Proficiency in MS Office applications is essential. Good understanding of a Computer Assisted Translation program such as eLUNA or similar platform would be an asset.

Contract Information

The first year of contract will be probationary with the possibility of further extension subject to satisfactory performance. This post is limited to local status* only. *Local status requires applicants to have unhindered permission to live and work in the UK.
