About the Region

The UNOPS Africa Regional Office, based in Nairobi, Kenya, oversees the delivery of over 250 projects across 40 countries, with a focus on fragile and conflict-affected settings. About the Country/Multi-Country Office

Based in Addis Ababa, the Horn of Africa Multi-Country Office (HAMCO) delivers project management, procurement, and infrastructure services across Djibouti, Ethiopia, South Sudan, and Sudan, with a primary focus on health, agriculture, and economic development. Established in 2009, HAMCO partners with governments and development stakeholders to implement impactful, results-driven initiatives that contribute to sustainable development. Since 2024, new projects have been aimed at expanding access to healthcare, education, energy, and livelihoods, particularly in underserved and conflict-affected regions. HAMCO also provides human resource management services, supporting the effective implementation of development initiatives. Key efforts include equipping research facilities, strengthening education and health systems, building vaccine research capacity, and enhancing resilience in communities affected by crisis. Through these interventions, HAMCO contributes to inclusive growth, regional stability, and the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) across the Horn of Africa.

Job Specific Context

The Ministry of Agriculture Conference Center is a state-of-the-art national venue designed to host high-level conferences, multi-stakeholder dialogues, training programs, and international events. Modern audiovisual systems, including projection, sound reinforcement, hybrid meeting capabilities, interpretation booths, and a central control room, are essential to delivering a seamless and professional client experience. The ICT Assistant will report to the ICT Associate (Audiovisual & Data Center Lead). The ICT Assistant will support technical audiovisual operations before, during, and after events, to help ensure that all technology systems are fully functional, well-maintained, and capable of meeting expectations of diverse national and international clients.

Role Purpose

The Position will support audiovisual systems including sound, projection, cameras, displays, microphones, interpretation systems, and digital recording tools that are correctly installed, tested, maintained, and operated. The role provides live event assistance in troubleshooting, and preventive maintenance to ensure uninterrupted, high-quality technical service delivery.

Functions / Key Results Expected

1. Event Preparation & Technical Setup

  • Assist in preparing, setting up, and testing advanced audiovisual systems including professional projectors, LED walls, microphones, interpretation units, high-capacity speakers, cameras, and hybrid meeting platforms used for large-scale national and international events.
  • Conduct basic pre-event technical checks under the guidance of the ICT Associate to confirm that all systems are powered, connected, and performing optimally across multiple halls and breakout rooms.
  • Support the technical team by reviewing event-specific requirements and arranging equipment according to detailed run-of-show plans, technical riders, and client specifications.
  • Set up presentation laptops, clickers, timers, visual displays, and backup devices, ensuring readiness for high-stakes conferences, diplomatic meetings, and multilingual sessions.

2. Live Event Support and Troubleshooting

  • Provide on-site technical assistance during conferences, workshops, and hybrid events, ensuring smooth operation of audiovisual systems.
  • Monitor audio levels, camera positions, and visual displays during events, escalating issues to the ICT Associate when needed.
  • Assist in basic troubleshooting such as reconnecting cables, adjusting microphones, restarting systems, or switching backup equipment.
  • Help presenters, moderators, and participants with simple equipment use (e.g., connecting laptops, using clickers, switching microphones).

3. Maintenance Support

  • Support the implementation of daily, weekly, and monthly preventive maintenance routines for all AV equipment.
  • Conduct routine tasks such as cleaning lenses, testing microphones, checking cables, ensuring batteries are replaced, and powering systems on/off correctly.
  • Maintain simple checklists and update the equipment logbook with observations on performance or issues.
  • Assist the ICT Associate in coordinating for major repairs, servicing, or calibration.

4. Inventory, Asset Management, and Documentation

  • Maintain an organized inventory of AV equipment, accessories, cables, batteries, and consumables.
  • Report missing, damaged, or malfunctioning items promptly to the ICT Associate.
  • Assist in labeling, storing, and tracking equipment and accessories to prevent loss or mix-up.
  • Support documentation efforts, including updating user manuals, equipment lists, and simple diagrams as directed.

5.  Knowledge building and sharing

  • Provide courteous and timely technical assistance to presenters, organizers, and delegates during setup and events.
  • Coordinate closely with the Teams to ensure rooms are technically ready before client arrival.
  • Assist in providing short equipment demonstrations or briefings to facilitators when required.
  • Collect basic feedback from users and relay concerns or suggestions to the ICT Associate to improve service quality.

  • A first level University (Bachelor’s) Degree in ICT, Information Systems, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or related fields

  • Vendor or industry certifications (e.g., AVIXA/InfoComm CTS, Crestron, Extron, or similar) are an advantage


Experience Requirements

Required

  • A minimum of 4 years of progressive experience in operating and supporting audiovisual equipment in a conference center, hotel, university auditorium, broadcast facility, or similar venue.

  • A minimum of 2 years experience with audiovisual system set up, integration, and trouble shooting, and safe handling of AV equipment.


Desired

  • Experience working in a large, high-profile meetings, conference center, especially those hosting international conferences, is desirable

  • Experience working with control rooms, cameras, digital signal processors, or advanced routing systems
