About the Country/Multi-Country Office

AUMCO delivers technical expertise, operational support, and sustainable infrastructure solutions for governments, donors, and international financial institutions. Flagship initiatives include Blueing the Black Sea—a GEF and World Bank partnership to reduce pollution and promote sustainable development—and Türkiye’s post-earthquake recovery programme, enhancing protective services for women and children. In Albania, projects revitalise cultural heritage and advance digital justice, while in Kosovo, new university infrastructure supports higher education. In Georgia, AUMCO facilitates the Eastern Partnership European School and strengthens rule of law and digital health access. Across Central Asia, activities range from health system strengthening in Uzbekistan to hazardous waste management in Tajikistan. About the Project Office
Since establishing its presence in Tashkent in 2023, UNOPS has been supporting healthcare infrastructure and service delivery across Uzbekistan. Key initiatives include: - COVID-19 Emergency Response – Strengthening resilience to pandemics by upgrading over 150 Sanitary-Epidemiological Committee facilities. The project delivers infrastructure improvements, diagnostic equipment, an ICT-based national epidemiological surveillance system, and expanded patient treatment capacity. - Oncology Services Development – Enhancing access to quality cancer care by equipping 14 regional hospitals with advanced medical, diagnostic, radiological, and ICT tools, establishing a national cancer registry, and providing capacity building for medical staff. - Hospital Infrastructure Design in Kashkadarya – Supporting healthcare reform through feasibility studies, site investigations, and technical designs for new hospitals in Karshi and Beshkent, aligned with national and international standards. Through these efforts, UNOPS is helping Uzbekistan strengthen its health systems and improve the quality of care for its citizens.
Job Specific Context
Austria Multi-Country Office (AUMCO) The Austria Multi-Country Office (AUMCO) is part of the UNOPS Europe and Central Asia Region (ECR). Specifically, AUMCO aims to enable the achievement of Agenda 2030 and the Paris Agreement through global programmes and tailored interventions in the Balkans, South Caucasus, and Central Asia, focused on Infrastructure, Procurement, Project Management (full service, back on track), HR and Transactional Services, Grants Management and Technical and Advisory Services. Uzbekistan Office Under the purview of AUMCO, the UNOPS Uzbekistan Office, established in Tashkent in October 2022 supports the Government of Uzbekistan’s development efforts in the country, through the provision of effective project management, infrastructure and procurement services. At present, the office has signed and has been implementing three engagements contributing to SGD3 (Good Health and Wellbeing), while actively working with the Government of Uzbekistan and development partners in diversifying its portfolio in line with the country’s development priorities including education. Languages:Fluency in English is required. Fluency in either Uzbek or Russian is required. Fluency in all three languages (English, Russian and Uzbek) is a strong asset.

Role Purpose
Intern in Biomedical Engineering Department supports the effective procurement, installation, and quality assurance of medical and laboratory equipment by providing technical, administrative, and coordination assistance under the supervision of the Department Head. The role is designed to build practical experience in biomedical engineering within a project environment, contributing to compliance with technical standards, procurement processes, stakeholder engagement, and knowledge sharing to ensure the timely and efficient delivery of healthcare and laboratory services.
Functions / Key Results Expected
Under the direct supervision of the Department Head, the Intern will provide engineering support in all activities related to the research, commission and installation of medical equipment. The functional responsibilities include:
● Technical support to biomedical procurement
● Support design administrative processes
● Stakeholder management support
● Monitoring and quality assurance support
● Knowledge building and knowledge sharing
1. Technical support to biomedical procurement
● Review and prepare technical medical specifications and requirements in terms of accuracy and suitability to overall requirements, including the appropriate application of UNOPS procurement governance framework.
Learn about the schedule of the requirements, conditions, evaluation criteria and exact submission needed from the bidders before the bid solicitation for biomedical equipment to be procured under the project.
Assist in preparing estimates and prices for all medical and laboratory equipment.
Help in evaluating technical specifications for medical and laboratory equipment, in close coordination with the Biomedical and Procurement teams.
Assist in determining compliance of bids in accordance with the technical requirements detailed in the invitation bid.
Participate in scheduled site visits.
2. Support administrative processes in biomedical department
● Support in the development of a comprehensive delivery, installation and training plans for the installed equipment.
● Assist in managing files and records of the designated processes.
● Schedule requested tasks related to these medical plans.
3. Stakeholder management
● Contribute and learn about establishment of solid working relationships with the stakeholders.
● Assist and learn communication with relevant stakeholders, to allow awareness of project activities, progress, exceptions, and other related matters under the biomedical scope.
● Participate in relevant external meetings, including with vendors and other respective medical consultants during the project lifespan, upon consultation with the Head of Department.
4. Monitoring and quality assurance
● Learn and assist in preparing monthly progress reports based on the established schedules and plans, encountered problems, solutions, planning of activities, etc.
● In consultation with other Biomedical Engineers, support the development and implementation of installation and training plans for all medical/laboratory equipment, subject to procurement.
● Assist in maintaining accurate, quality and completed documentation related to the project’s biomedical procurement processes.
● Perform quality assurance upon delivery of goods with assistance of senior colleagues.
5. Knowledge building and knowledge sharing
● Learn about the organization, facilitation and/or delivery of training and learning initiatives for project personnel on procurement-related topics.
● Learn from and provide sound contributions to knowledge networks and communities of practice by synthesizing lessons learnt and dissemination of best practices in medical procurement.
● Collect feedback, ideas, and internal knowledge about processes and best practices and utilize productively.
● Liaise with relevant MCO, HQ and UN system units to exchange information and follow up on pending issues.
Terms and Conditions
UNOPS Uzbekistan will provide the intern with the following:
- Workspace in a shared office including computer, stationery, and landline telephone
- Use of common office facilities, as for all UNOPS personnel
- A monthly stipend from UNOPS in the amount of USD680, if they do not receive funds from other institutions. However, interns must make their own arrangements for accommodation, travel, and insurance coverage.
The internship comes with no expectations of future employment with UNOPS as a direct result of the internship. The internship is offered for a period of 6 months with the possibility of extension up to 1 year.

Education Requirements
- Enrollment in a University Degree or significant coursework (if the degree is still ongoing) in biomedical engineering or related field is required.
- Applicants who have graduated from such studies within the past 36 months will also be considered eligible for the position.
Experience Requirements
- Experience in the biomedical engineering field is desirable;
- Computer literacy: working knowledge of Google Suite will be advantageous;
- Experience in development work is an asset.
