Malteser International is the international humanitarian relief agency of the Sovereign Order of Malta. For over 60 years, we provide relief and recovery for people during and following conflicts and disasters around the world. Christian values and humanitarian principles form the foundations of our work. In over 30 countries in Africa, the Americas, Asia, Europe, and the Middle East, we support people in need – regardless of their religion, origin, or political convictions.
Malteser International (MI) has been working in Nigeria since 2017. In Northeast Nigeria (Borno, Taraba, and Adamawa States), MI is currently active in the WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene), Protection, and Food, Nutrition Security and Livelihoods (FNSL) sectors, aiming to save lives and improve the well-being of both internally displaced persons (IDPs) and host communities. WASH activities focus on improving access to safe water, sanitation, and hygiene through activities such as non-food-item-distribution, solarizing boreholes, rehabilitating hand pumps, constructing latrines, and promoting hygiene practices. Protection activities target the prevention of and response to gender-based violence (GBV). FNSL interventions include micro-gardening, rearing pullets for egg production, composting, food demonstrations, referrals of malnutrition cases to nutrition partners, and community sensitization on nutrition. MI applies a participatory, gender-sensitive, and inclusive approach.
