Duties and Responsibilities
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. Established in April 2012, the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) has a membership of over 150 Governments (see www.ipbes.net) and seeks to respond to the needs of governments and other stakeholders to strengthen the science-policy interface on biodiversity and ecosystem services. Under the direct supervision of the IPBES Head of Communications, the Consultant will work closely with the IPBES Stakeholder Engagement Officer to: Strategically plan, organize and oversee operationalization of the stakeholder days in advance of the sessions of the IPBES Plenary: • Provide strategic planning guidance and manage logistical arrangements for stakeholder days – including driving project team collaboration, agenda-setting, outreach and event management for both in-person and online participation. • In-person management of stakeholder day event logistics, poster sessions, speaker management, liaison with technical teams and local partners and oversight of webcast elements. • Identification and expansion of relevant stakeholder networks per Plenary session, with a specific focus on widening local and regional stakeholder engagement in the host country and with under-represented IPBES stakeholder groups. Deepen, expand, assess and report on implementation of the IPBES Stakeholder Engagement Strategy by: 1. Provide better understanding of the IPBES stakeholder landscape, through: • Expanded dialogue with organized IPBES stakeholder groups and representatives (e.g. quarterly meetings and stakeholder day collaboration) • Deploying, analyzing and reporting on comprehensive periodic stakeholder surveys based on the process and structure used in 2020 and 2025 2. Increase IPBES reach to diverse stakeholder audiences, through: •Acting as the focal point for the recognized stakeholder networks and all key stakeholder groups • Collaboration with IPBES communications team to craft, schedule and monitor social media posts about IPBES stakeholder engagement as well as craft and publish improved related online content on the IPBES website • Produce, and adapt creative content for IPBES social and online media about stakeholder engagement • Strategically plan, expand and report on IPBES stakeholder engagement in Africa, Eastern Europe and Central Asia, as well as with the private sector • Plan and implement specific outreach events with underserved and underrepresented stakeholder communities and groups 3. Improving effectiveness of stakeholder contributions across all IPBES functions, through: • Co-created targeted audio and visual materials to showcase and promote types of engagement opportunities • Acting as the stakeholder engagement focal point for and report on all IPBES dialogues, webinars and similar organized by the IPBES Technical Support Units with a specific focus on stakeholder audiences as well as IPBES-related events convened by strategic stakeholder organizations • Maintaining increasing and improving the TRACK Impact Tracking Database • Facilitating new and expanded uptake opportunities globally and regionally, through stakeholder engagement activities, for all published IPBES Assessment Reports, but with a specific focus on report • Strategically plan, design, implement, promote, report on and improve a new global IPBES database on indicative uptake of IPBES products • Strengthen collaboration with all IPBES Technical Support Units to mobilize new and expand existing engagement of stakeholders across the IPBES work programme • Strengthen engagement with existing initiatives and organizations active in the support of national and regional platforms for IPBES and biodiversity.
Qualifications/special skills
University degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in communication, environmental studies, public policy, public administration, law or related field is required. A first-level university degree in combination with qualifying experience will be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree. • Minimum 5 years of professional experience is required in stakeholder engagement, project management, event management, network-building or communications. • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to write clear, concise drafts in English is required. • Good organizational and personal management skills, with ability to prioritize work issues to meet deadlines with minimal supervision and adjust to changing situations while maintaining focus on delivery and follow-through is required. • Demonstrated professional experience with environmental issues and knowledge of IPBES, biodiversity and environment-related matters is desirable. • Experience in an international organization or intergovernmental context – especially in the United Nations - is desirable.
Languages
Fluency in oral and written English is required. Proficiency in any other of the official United Nations languages, preferably French, will be an advantage.
