The Internship Programme aims at attracting talented students and graduates who have a specific interest in, or whose studies have covered, areas relevant to IOM programmes and activities. Interns must be between 20 and 36 years old and should have less than two years of relevant working experience. 

 
In general, the Internship Programme aims at attracting talented students and graduates who:

 
a) have a specific interest in, or whose studies have covered, areas relevant to IOM programmes and activities;
b) are holding a scholarship for internship placements in international organizations and/or for whom internship is required to complete their studies; or
c) are sponsored by governmental/non governmental institutions and/or academia to work in specific areas relevant to both IOM and the sponsor.
d) are either enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent) or have graduated in the last 12 months.
e) are between 20 and 36 years of age.

 

Background Information

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) Mission in Azerbaijan has been operational since 1996 and has since implemented a wide range of programmes spanning migration governance, migrant protection, border management, migration health, resilience building, crisis response, and climate action. The Climate Action Unit leads the Mission’s work on human mobility in the context of climate change, supporting national processes such as the NAP and NDCs, strengthening institutional capacities, and generating evidence for policy development. Its operational portfolio includes climate adaptation and disaster risk reduction initiatives such as coastal early warning enhancements, rainwater harvesting, and kahriz based water security solutions, alongside broader resilience efforts in vulnerable communities. In advancing this agenda, the Mission works closely with the Government, UN partners, and development actors, and plays an active role in major climate and urban development processes, including COP29 preparations and engagement with the 13th session of the World Urban Forum (WUF13), where it contributes technical inputs, coordination, and communication support. 

Responsibilities

Supervision

Under the direct supervision of the Project Manager, in coordination with other unit leads, and under the overall supervision of Head of Office, the Intern will assist in supporting Mission’s activities in all portfolios, including but not limited to migration, environment, and climate change, and assisted voluntary return and reintegration. 

Learning Objectives
  • Develop the ability to draft high‑quality written outputs by preparing correspondence, notes for file, briefing notes, reports, presentations, and other mission documents. 
  • Strengthen research and analytical skills by collecting, reviewing, and synthesizing information on climate mobility trends and their relevance to IOM’s work in Azerbaijan. 
  • Gain hands‑on experience in knowledge management through maintaining the Climate Action SharePoint workspace and other internal communication platforms. 
  • Build practical understanding of organizational archiving procedures by supporting systematic document archiving. 
  • Enhance awareness of external communication dynamics by monitoring media coverage related to the Mission’s work and developments on WUF13. 
  • Develop event‑coordination and logistical skills by supporting the organization of meetings, visits, and activities in the lead‑up to and during WUF13. 
  • Strengthen administrative and operational competencies by assisting with routine office processes, including preparing purchase and payment requests and other administrative documentation. 
  • Cultivate adaptability and professional growth by undertaking additional tasks assigned in support of the Climate Action Unit’s objectives
Training Components and Learning Elements

The intern will Gain experience working in an international organization within the United Nations system.

  • Develop practical experience in administrative, media, and communications activities.
  • Gain a better understanding of IOM’s work as an intergovernmental organization in the field of migration, including its activities under various programmes.
  • .Strengthen writing, editing, presentation, and other technical skills.
  • Become familiar with IOM administrative systems, procedures, and documentation workflows.
  • Participate in media monitoring related to climate action and developments around WUF13.
  • Gain practical experience in event coordination and logistical support for WUF13.
  • Attend IOM events and other relevant meetings, when possible.
  • Access online training courses to support professional development.


By the end of the internship, the intern will be able to:

  • Produce clear, professional written outputs.
  • Collect and synthesize climate‑mobility information relevant to IOM’s work.
  • Maintain organized digital knowledge‑management systems.
  • Support events and visits with confidence, especially WUF13‑related activities.
  • Navigate administrative processes such as purchase and payment requests.
  • Adapt to diverse tasks and operate effectively within the Climate Action Unit.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications and Experience

EDUCATION

  • Be enrolled in the final academic year of a university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent); or 
  • Be enrolled in a graduate degree programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or
  • Have graduated with a university or graduate degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within one-year of graduation.

EXPERIENCE

  • Experience of working with / volunteering for international organizations, non-governmental organizations or governmental institutions in a multicultural setting is an advantage.

Previous working experience in project management and administration work is an advantage.

SKILLS

  • Demonstrated interest and knowledge in the area of international relations, social affairs, and migration.
  • Familiarity with the UN system.
  • Excellent oral and written skills; excellent drafting, formulation, reporting skills. 
  • Computer literacy and good knowledge of MS Office & other relevant software.
  • Discreet, detail and client-oriented, patient and a willingness to learn new things.
  • Proven ability to multi-task, prioritize and work independently to meet deadlines.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.

Languages

For this position, fluency in English and Azerbaijani is required (oral and written).

Proficiency of language(s) required will be specifically evaluated during the selection process, which may include written and/or oral assessments.

Notes

Depending on experience and location, interns are granted a small monthly stipend to help offset costs. Interns benefiting from an internship allowance or scholarship granted by their university or other sponsoring body that includes financial remuneration or credits for coursework will not be eligible for the stipend.

IOM covers Interns against occupational accidents and illnesses under the Compensation Plan (CP), free of charge, for the duration of the internship. IOM does not provide evacuation or medical insurance for reasons related to non-occupational accidents and illnesses. Interns are responsible for their own medical insurance for non-occupational accident or illness and will be required to provide written proof of such coverage before commencing work.
