Background Information
IOM Netherlands’ ERCOM Unit delivers accessible, audience‑focused communication across web, social media, and press to inform migrants and stakeholders, support programmes (e.g., AVRR/REAN, resettlement), and strengthen IOM’s public presence. Activities follow IOM NL’s Social & Online Communication Strategy 2026—human‑centred, evidence‑based storytelling, with defined channel roles and KPIs—and draw on global IOM social media resources and guidelines.
Responsibilities
Core Functions / Responsibilities
Content production: Draft, edit and proof short and long‑form content (web news, stories, captions, newsletters) in Dutch and English, ensuring accuracy, clarity, and alignment with IOM branding and house style.
Social media: Help plan editorial calendars; prepare copy and basic graphics/video; schedule, monitor, and report on performance across X, LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram - applying IOM social media guidelines and using available tips/templates.
Analytics & insight: Track agreed KPIs and compile short insights to inform content iteration in line with the 2026 strategy
Website support: Publish and update pages/articles (CMS), maintain links and visuals, and uphold accessibility and house‑style standards; support newsletter production.
Media monitoring & research: Scan relevant Dutch/European migration news and policy updates; draft succinct summaries and talking points for internal use.
Event & campaign support: Assist with communications around events/outreach (copy, visuals, photo/video logistics, live updates) in line with channel roles.
Ethics & safeguarding: Apply IOM standards for responsible communication, consent, data protection, and safeguarding in all outputs; follow IOM social media conduct guidance.
Administrative & coordination tasks: Maintain content folders, track requests, schedule meetings, and support general team workflows.
- Produce and publish content across web and social channels, applying editorial planning and house style
- Use analytics to generate practical insights and recommendations against defined KPIs and channel roles.
- Practice ethical, human‑centred storytelling aligned with IOM guidance and safeguards for social media.
- Contribute to newsletters and reporting; strengthen your ability to summarize policy/news developments clearly.
- Build professional experience in a multi‑stakeholder, international communications environment.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications and Experience
Education
- At application time, candidates must be (a) enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree; or (b) enrolled in a graduate programme; or (c) a recent graduate who will start the internship within one year of graduation.
- Field of study: Communications, journalism, international relations, political/social sciences, public policy, or related.
Experience
- Basic video/photo editing and design experience
- content management on social media & website
- experience with NGO/public‑sector communications or migration‑related topics
Skills
- Excellent writing and editing in Dutch and English
- Familiarity with major social platforms and scheduling
- basic design skills (Canva/Adobe or similar)
- comfort with CMS (Joomla/WordPress or similar) and analytics dashboards;
Languages
For this internship, fluency in English and Dutch is required. An additional UN language is an asset.
Proficiency of language(s) required will be specifically evaluated during the selection process, which may include written and/or oral assessments.

Notes
Depending on experience and location, interns are granted a small monthly stipend to help offset costs. Interns benefiting from an internship allowance or scholarship granted by their university or other sponsoring body that includes financial remuneration or credits for coursework will not be eligible for the stipend.
IOM covers Interns against occupational accidents and illnesses under the Compensation Plan (CP), free of charge, for the duration of the internship. IOM does not provide evacuation or medical insurance for reasons related to non-occupational accidents and illnesses. Interns are responsible for their own medical insurance for non-occupational accident or illness and will be required to provide written proof of such coverage before commencing work.
