Job Description

Context
Under the overall supervision of the Chief of Mission (CoM) in Ecuador and direct supervision of the Protection Coordinator, and, in collaboration with relevant units and field offices, the Protection Assistant will provide administrative and operational support for the internal implementation of protection activities, contributing to the efficient execution of projects and compliance with institutional standards. 

Responsibilities

  • Support the implementation and monitoring of protection activities, including logistics for events, workshops, and community meetings.
  • Support the organization of administrative actions with internal units (finance, procurement, human resources) to facilitate project execution.
  • Compile and organize information on activities, beneficiaries, and project deliverables.
  • Assist in preparing progress reports, meeting minutes, presentations, and other administrative documents.
  • Maintain updated physical and digital files for the unit, including beneficiary databases and attendance records.
  • Respond to general inquiries from migrants, returnees, and individuals intending to migrate, referring cases to specialized orientation spaces.
  • Support the management of informational materials and community communication tools.
  • Perform other administrative and operational tasks as assigned by the supervisor. 

Qualifications

Education
  • School diploma with four years of relevant experience; or,
  • Bachelor’s degree in political or social sciences, International Relations, Development Studies, Migration Studies, Human Rights, Law or related fields from an accredited academic institution with two years of relevant professional experience. 
Accredited Universities are those listed in the UNESCO World Higher Education Database.
 
Experience
  • Demonstrated experience supporting activities related to human trafficking, migrant smuggling, return and reintegration, child protection, gender-based violence (GBV), and community-based protection.  
  • Experience in project implementation and administrative support in development or humanitarian projects.
  • Experience in working with migrants, refugees, internally displaced persons, and other vulnerable groups; and,
  • Prior work experience with international humanitarian organizations, non-government or government institutions/organizations in a multi-cultural setting is an advantage.  
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong analytical and synthesis abilities.
  • Capacity to draft and edit technical documents. 
Skills
  • Ability to manage logistical and administrative tasks efficiently, including organizing meetings and workshops and maintaining records.
  • Ability to support the documentation and follow-up of protection cases, including returnees and survivors of trafficking or GBV, while maintaining confidentiality and adhering to ethical standards.
  • Clear and respectful communication with internal teams, beneficiaries, and external stakeholders; ability to respond to general inquiries and draft basic reports.
  • Capacity to work effectively within a multidisciplinary protection team and support coordination across units and with field staff.
  • Knowledge of key protection principles (e.g., do no harm, confidentiality, informed consent) and ability to apply them in daily tasks.
  • Willingness to take on varied tasks and adapt to changing priorities in a dynamic operational environment. 
Languages
  • For this position, fluency in Spanish is required (oral and written).  
  • Oral and written fluency of beneficiary’s languages (​English​) is an advantage.   
IOM’s official languages are English, French and Spanish.
Proficiency of language(s) required will be specifically evaluated during the selection process, which may include written and/or oral assessments.
